Pole Top Rescue

A Hands-On Reference for Safe, Consistent Aerial Construction

Project Overview:

I designed and implemented a hands-on pole-top rescue training program for a local telecommunications company. The program emphasizes critical skills, including essential knot tying, rescue techniques, hazard awareness, and emergency response efficiency. By combining practical exercises with theoretical instruction, the training boosts linemen’s confidence and proficiency, ultimately reducing risk and enhancing outcomes during rescue operations.

Audience:

The learners include linemen and ground hands across various Oregon-based crews and contractors. Participants enter the training with diverse skill levels and experience in pole-top rescues.

Course Outcomes:

Upon completing the course, participants can:

  • Safely ascend to the rescue site.
  • Identify and tie four essential rescue knots.
  • Use hand tools to set up a friction belay system for controlled dummy lowering.
  • Safely cut the dummy’s belt.
  • Securely lower the dummy from the pole while suspended.
